Our Story

The Women And Children’s Empowerment Network in Africa (WACENA) undertakes the role of alerting the entire world to the lack of human rights for women and children in Africa, rights which are too often ignored or unfulfilled.  WACENA stands as a voice for all victims of human rights’ violations on the continent.

Human rights refer to the “basic rights and freedoms to which all humans are entitled”, including civil and political rights, such as the right to life and liberty, freedom of expression, and equality before the law; and economic, social and cultural rights, including the right to participate in culture, the right to food, the right to work, and the right to education.

Securing these rights for all women and children is a message of hope and empowerment for the current generation and the generations to come. We believe that together, a significant difference can be made by becoming aware of the different agencies of the international community on human rights, including WACENA, which seek to encourage and enforce the implementation of the internationally agreed-upon standards where they matter, in the daily lives of both women and children.

We all have a part we can play in helping to secure these basic human rights, especially for women and children, which should be a reality for everyone. We seek cooperation with all women- and children-centered groups, NGOs, individuals, foundations, academic institutions and international agencies in order to build a more constructive network so as to secure the rights of women and children as widely as possible.

We ensure full promotion of the rights of women and children to education and we seek to meet the significant challenges that have emerged such as human trafficking, minority rights, HIV/AIDS, biotechnology and the effects of globalization.

The highest incidences/cases of corrective rape and defilement sound like a ghost-drama (none existent) in the lives of African women and girls. Yet, a lack of collaborative evidence in courts to have a chance of justice remains a nightmare in the fight against these crimes.

Behind these shocking situations are also women and girls who don’t regard themselves as victims, therefore they are not willing to make complaints to their local authorities. This has rendered great failure in recognizing the sexual exploitation in the early stages.

WACENA exists to eradicate all causes of the lack of organizational priority over the sexual exploitation women and children, and instead, move the assessment of these crimes to a high priority of action.

WACENA is a family of women leaders from diverse walks of life. All individuals, groups, organizations and institutions that choose to make a difference in the lives of women and children are our immediate neighbors and allies whose contributions are profoundly regarded and appreciated.

Dear beloved visitor, your choice to pay us a visit on this website is one of the awesome contributions we do appreciate wholeheartedly! We are counting on you!
